Crank Set & Handle Bars

The handle-bars on this bike were known at the time as "skid-bars". I'm not sure why. Some of todays bars are similar, in that they have the same number of bends in them, but the angle and length of each section in the bar differs. My bars were very rusted and heavily pitted, making them expensive to re-plate (as a lot of time is consumed preparing the metal before plating - see also rims section).

My headstemwas broken, so a second hand one was substituted. In my youth a broke a number of headstems, as I pulled hard upwards on the bars when climing hills. The point of failure was at the base of an expansion slot in the headstem. The replacement type has no such slot, as it has an offset-wedge to clamp the headstem in position.

Shown above, prior to re-plating: the Williams Crank-set, "skid-bars", headstem,
and the shell from the Sturmey Archer AW-hub.
